There are a few definitions and meanings of the word “Breathe”:
- To Breathe: A basic human function necessary in order to survive.
- The Breath: In yoga, the force (aka prana) within us all. When this force is harnessed it can overcome obstacles, challenges, and lead you deeper into finding yourself.
- Breathing: Another word describing “being alive”.
Breath is what all of our lives center around. We live each day in hopes of that feeling of being truly alive. When we notice our breathe, we are able to come back to center.
The breath consists of our own selves and the forces within us. Being able to shut out the world, even if just for a moment, is important to maintain some small amount of presence and mindfulness in the high-speed technological world we live in.
Remembering and taking note of our breathe allows us to be present in the moment and forget about our deadlines, to-do lists, and other looming responsibilities. It reminds us to pay-attention to ourselves and give some much needed love.
I constantly struggle with my own self-doubts, challenges, and frustrations. When these feeling arise, I try to pause life, close my eyes, and take three deep breathes. Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale, inhale and exhale.
While listening to my breath I am able to bring my focus inward, away from all the distractions. It helps me find my inner strength and courage to understand where my feelings are coming from and why I may be reacting to them in a certain way.
Sadly this little pause doesn’t always happen when I need it to – it’s a work in progress.
Focusing inward can be scary. Taking a good hard look while quieting your mind can bring up scary thoughts, painful memories, and a whole dialogue of self-doubt.
Do not let your fears stop you. With your breath you can allow all of these emotions to emerge, be able to accept them in whatever form they carry, and then work through them in a healthy way.
We can go our entire lives “going with the flow” by not looking within, we can get lost and never feel truly alive. What are your passions, mantras, and reasons you jump out of bed in the morning? What makes you feel alive? What is your truth?
